1 ) Jonty Rhodes :
There will be dilemma to choose the best batsman in the world. There will be confusion between Sir Donald Bradman, Sachin Tendulkar etc and to choose best bowler is also hard job because there will be comparison between Muttiah Muralitharan, Courtney Walsh etc. But, to choose the best fielder in the world, there will be no dilemma because Jonty Rhodes is the best fielder in the world. No one can think better fielder than Jonty Rhodes due to his consistent fielding performance.
There were many sceptics when 22-year-old Jonty Rhodes was selected for South Africa’s 1992 World Cup squad. He could field, but could he bat? At best, he was regarded as someone who might be useful in a one-day team. Rhodes, however, was already thinking ahead and said his ambition was to be a good Test player.
jonty is the only player who has 5 catches in a ODI match. Though he got chance in the team as a Batsman, he soon became familiar with his trademark diving and extraordinary fielding capacity. Though he was a batsman by his playing ability but it was his “extraordinary fielding” that brought up him into the limelight. He is best remembered for his diving run out to Inzamam-ul-Haq in 1992 world cups.
2) Ricky Ponting :
It would be a matter of great shame if one excludes the name of Ricky Ponting when it comes to the list of top ten fielders. Ponting is brilliant wherever you place him, but it is his speed in the inner ring that makes him a truly special fielder. He cuts off the angles, pulls off brilliant run outs and takes wonderful catches. On more than one occasion, Ponting has changed the course of a game with his fielding. He has 194 and 160 catches under his hood in tests and ODI version of cricket respectively which itself reflects his great fielding talent. Ponting stoods out in second spot of the list.
Ricky Ponting went on to play many such innings, which would not only bring smiles to Australian fans, but also to fans around the world. There is no better sight than to see Ponting quickly rush onto the back foot and play the pull and hook shots with panache and also passionately drive the ball through the covers off the front foot, with his typical high backlift. Besides he remains one of the best fielders in one cricket, even at the age of 37, having quick reflexes which helps him take catches from any position in the 30 yard circle and sharp accuracy which helps him in hitting the stumps directly, causing several run-outs.
3)Herschelle Gibbs :
This athletic man from South Africa is in the third spot of the list. South African cricket players are a great players of another game called RUGBY. Thus the reason is clear for their outstanding fielding abilities. Herschelle Gibbs is so athletic in the field, he dives so amazingly, catches the ball with great grip, is lethal at throwing. He has turned the momentum of the game in various ocassions. Gibbs is the talented fielder and a great successor to South Africa’s fielding talent Jhonty Rhodes.
At 36 years of age, Gibbs is still the best replacement for Jonty Rhodes for Proteas.. he calls himself an electrifying fielder. !!
4) Paul Collingwood :
When it comes to fielding, how can one miss the name of Paul Collingwood. He is amazing English fielder. Though he is okay with bat but surprisingly well in field. 5)Mohammad Kaif/Yuvraj Singh :
There is a tie between these two amazing fielders from India to be at the seventh position of the list. Though both these two are great in field, but Kaif is more remembered for his great fielding ability. Though Kaif was not so handy with bat but he has always been best reckoned for his great fielding. He has saved many boundaries for India and other teams.
On the other hand, it is equally amazing to watch Yuvraj on field along with crease. His athletic fielding has always made the jaws of many spectators wide open. His body stretches like a rubber when he controls the ball. His amazing gymnastic filled fielding is a great scene to watch on field.
